Layar is back! The Augmented Reality Browser 3.0 is now available in the App Store for iPhone 3GS. The team behind Layar has rebuilt the software and made it quicker, less resource-demanding and more stable. What the *** is an Augmented Reality Browser? An augmented reality is reality combined with a viritual reality. So what Layar does is that it uses the camera in your phone to record your reality (what you see) and adds a layer of digital contents. This makes it possible to display information about your surroundings that is not present in reality. Different layers can be choosen, which are just like different web pages shown by a web browser, that add their content to your reality. |
So what can you use it for?
To put it simple Layar is used for adding information to what you see around you through your phone. It can be used in many creative ways.It can be used as a storytelling platform by adding pictures and information leading the user on a set path. You could use it to go back or forward in time, seeing how the place you are at looked in the middle ages, or how it will look when buildings that are about to be built are in place. Is can be used simply to display funny objects or artwork. The beauty of it is that the Layar software is free to download and anyone can develop and share new layers. |
